Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that if there is someone who can take the country's economy forward, prioritise the interests of the people and develop the nation, he is prepared to step back from the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking at a PNF gathering held in Addu Feydhoo, Yameen said his criticism of the government is not rooted in a desire for power.
He noted that with four years of revenue burden resting on the state, serving as president in such a situation is a major challenge, and that what he wants is for the people to rise from the current circumstances.
Yameen also said that if a capable person comes forward and convincingly shows they can deliver economic development, he is ready to support that person.
