Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said mercantile courts with international-standard judges should be established to protect businesses and foreign investments in the Maldives.
Speaking at a gathering held in Feedu, Addu City, he said confidence in the Maldives' current legal system has declined, making it important to bring in capable judges who have practiced in countries such as Singapore to resolve major business disputes.
According to Yameen, such a system would allow disputes to be resolved quickly within about 20 days. He also said foreign judges would not be susceptible to influence, and that even if judges of that calibre had to be paid a monthly salary of USD 500,000 to protect the tourism industry — which comprises investments worth billions of dollars — it would be an expense the Maldives could and should bear.
