US President Donald Trump has attacked the Norwegian Nobel Committee for awarding the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navi Pillay, saying the decision had “demeaned the once great Nobel Peace Prize.”
In a social media post, Trump called Pillay “an unabashed hater of America and Israel.” Pillay, a former UN human rights chief, headed a United Nations commission that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
The committee honoured Pillay on Friday for her work promoting peace and international law, recognising her efforts to ensure that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the award, describing Pillay as “a champion of international law and human rights, and a steadfast, independent voice of justice.” He said the prize was a tribute to all those working to uphold international law, human rights and peace.
