MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern over candidates in the party's presidential primary announcing their running mates.
The concern follows former Vice President Faisal Naseem's announcement that he will contest the MDP presidential primary, with Malé City Mayor Adam Azim as his running mate. In a message to the party's National Council, Nasheed said the running mate slot is a major advantage for the MDP when consulting and forming coalitions with other political parties, and urged candidates not to act in a way that would throw that advantage away.
Nasheed also stressed the importance of watching how former President Abdulla Yameen approaches the presidential election, and of finding a formula that would allow the MDP to win the election in a single round.
So far, four people have announced they will compete for the MDP's ticket for the 2028 presidential election. Faisal Naseem is the only one to have named a running mate.
