The foundation stone has been laid for the largest mosque being built in the Maldives, Jami'u as-Sultan Muhammad bin Abdullah (Sultan Muhammad bin Abdullah Grand Mosque and Islamic Civilization Centre). President Dr. Muizzu laid the foundation at a special ceremony in Hulhumalé Phase 2.
The ceremony was held to mark the historic occasion of Maldives completing 900 years of Islam. Among those who attended were Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, CEO of Saudi Al-Rajhi Company Bandar Abdullah Al-Rajhi, Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani, and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ali Zuhair.
The mosque is being built by Saudi Arabia's Al-Rajhi Company in the area linking Hulhumalé Phase 2 and Phase 3. It will have space for 10,000 worshippers at a time. The complex will also include administrative offices, an Islamic library, a cultural centre, a Quran study centre, an exhibition hall and a multipurpose community hall, as well as a visitor area for the public and tourists, an Islamic bookstore and a gift shop.
The government says the project will stand as a symbol of Maldives' Islamic civilization and development, and will play a major role in passing Islamic education and culture to future generations.
