The Maldivian government has strongly condemned the Houthi attack targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Twelve people were killed and more than 300 others sustained injuries of varying degrees in yesterday's attack. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that attacks targeting civilians and critical infrastructure are a clear violation of international law and pose a serious threat to the security and stability of the entire region. The government extended its condolences to the families of those killed and to the Saudi government, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The ministry further said the Maldives will always stand firmly with Saudi Arabia and will fully support every measure the kingdom takes to safeguard its sovereignty and security.
Those killed in the attack, the third on the airport within a week, included Saudi nationals as well as citizens of several other countries. All flights to Riyadh have been diverted and airport operations suspended following the attack, while the Houthis have also warned international airlines against flying through Saudi airspace.
