Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Managing Director Hussein Shafeeu has said preparations are under way for port operations to begin at Thilafushi on 27 October, under the project to relocate Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi.
Speaking during a visit to Thilafushi by President Dr. Muizzu and Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Shafeeu said that from the 27th of this month, operations would proceed at Thilafushi alongside Malé. He also said work was being accelerated so the entire project could be completed by the end of November 2027.
According to Shafeeu, large volumes of cargo continue to arrive while the harbour lacks adequate storage facilities in its current condition, creating congestion. Malé harbour, which began operating in 1986, has been serving beyond capacity since 2015. While only about five hectares of space is used in Malé, 60 hectares of land has been allocated for port development at Thilafushi.
Under the phased project, work on the first phase’s 100-metre domestic quay, which began last year, has now been fully completed. Work on the international quay has been entrusted to a Chinese company, and when the full project is finished a major two-kilometre area is expected to be developed.
