An urgent motion calling for the disclosure of the confidential terms and details of the agreement for the mega project being carried out in Rasmalé by Eagle Hills has been submitted to the People's Majlis, and members have voted to debate it.
Presenting the motion at today's sitting, Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem said keeping the agreements of such a large national project secret would cause serious harm to the public and to state finances. He also said there are important concerns about the project that need to be clarified.
Among the main concerns raised in the motion is that the agreement was drawn up in a way that does not allow the state to recover the cost of reclaiming the land, which was paid for with public funds. The motion also says that granting Eagle Hills more than 50 hectares of Rasmalé for 99 years, without any acquisition cost or rent, raises legal and financial questions.
The MP further noted that the company has been given the right to create rolling lease interests to rent out properties developed on the land to third parties.
The motion, which states that keeping the agreements of such large projects secret could cause major losses to state assets and finances and open the door to corruption, was accepted for debate on the floor with the votes of 53 members.
