President Dr. Muizzu has said that enabling the Maldives to grow designated food varieties to the level the country needs — without importing them — and to supply them to the market is an important government goal.
He made the remarks in a social media message marking the 17th National Farmers' Day.
In his message, President Dr. Muizzu conveyed greetings to farmers and their families. He said Farmers' Day is a day to value the work hardworking Maldivian farmers do to strengthen food security and diversify the economy. Reducing reliance on imports and producing crops on the country's own land using environmentally friendly methods, he noted, is directly linked to the nation's independence.
Fluctuations in global food prices and barriers to transport, he said, underscore the need to increase food production in the Maldives to protect the country. Expanding agriculture would also help retain foreign exchange and create job opportunities on the islands.
President Dr. Muizzu said the government's aim is to grow designated varieties to the level the Maldives needs without importing them, and to make it possible to supply them to the market. In that effort, he said, continuing without interruption the work of opening pathways for farmers to increase their income with the help of modern technology remains his resolve.
National Farmers' Day was first marked in the Maldives in 2009. The 17th National Farmers' Day is being observed today under the slogan "From innovation, a prosperous life".
