President Dr. Muizzu will visit Pakistan from 20 to 22 October, making the first official visit to the country by a Maldivian president in more than ten years. It will be the first official visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan since then-President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's visit in May 2015.
During the visit to Islamabad, where he will be accompanied by a high-level delegation including ministers, President Dr. Muizzu will hold separate meetings with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.
Official talks during the visit are set to cover further strengthening ties between the two countries, regional interests, and reviving the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Discussions will also cover working together in international forums such as the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as well as strengthening economic and trade ties.
Around 12 agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in various sectors have been prepared for signing between the two countries during the visit. These include an agreement to launch direct flights between the Maldives and Pakistan, an MoU on cooperation in the health sector, and strengthening ties in higher education and research and in defence.
Several agreements are also set to be signed to strengthen cooperation in finance, technology, parliamentary relations, tourism, climate change and the media.
